Brain Function

Brain function fascinates me.

How does our brain make sense of gibberish? This brain teasing audio illusion puts memory to the test!

How we process sensory information, and how we remember events and places was the inspiration behind our Memories photo series and postcards.

Have you ever wondered how our brains make sense of the things around us? What makes things familiar and also how we can read, hear, understand and process information so quickly?

Below is a experiment where an audio illusion from an episode of The Pulse on WHYY proves how clever our brains are. Listeners are first presented with a sentence we’re told is real English, but has been distorted by a computer program. After we’ve been played the unchanged original sentence, however, our brain is suddenly able to make complete sense of the gibberish version as well. According to the reasercher, this is because our brain is constantly using old information to make sense of new events. Try it for yourself below!

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this,

Till next time.
